Just starting out? You’re in the right place, too. We cover every fundamental technique right from scratch, giving you the method, continuous guidance, and breathing room you need to build muscle memory with confidence.

Give yourself the space to learn

Good throwing takes time, but across 10 weeks (20 hours in total), you have all the time in the world to settle into the craft and enjoy every shift in the process.

Mentored by Alessandro—master potter with over 30 years at the wheel—and our studio team, you’ll learn to spot your mistakes and gently dial them in, building the instinct and control needed to throw completely on your own.

A weekly ritual for yourself

A dedicated pause in your week, far from the city rush. Just you, the hypnotic rhythm of the wheelhead, and an honest dialogue with clay. Ceramic practice as grounding, focus, and quiet presence.

Program

Course Curriculum

Goal: Master core wheel throwing techniques and build complete autonomy.
 
A thorough, hands-on path from raw clay preparation to complex finishing. Throughout the course, we analyze your thrown pieces together with instructors to pinpoint mistakes, refine posture, and build clean technique.

Phase 1: Understanding Clay, Prep & Centering (Month 1)

Connect with the material, understand body mechanics, and take command of the wheel.

  • Clay Selection: Identify different clay bodies and how they react on the wheel.
  • Wedging: Manual kneading techniques to eliminate air pockets and homogenize the clay.
  • Centering: Posture, leverage, and hand stability to bring the ball into balance on a spinning wheel.
  • Opening & Base Setting: Form a solid, crack-free floor with uniform thickness.
  • First Cylinders: Early wall pulls to create straight, balanced walls.

Phase 2: Building Muscle Memory & Core Shapes (Months 1 & 2)

Move beyond basic cylinders into functional everyday tableware.

  • Two-Hand Coordination: Synchronize inner and outer hand pressure for controlled, effortless pulls.
  • Core Profiles: Shape clean cylindrical mugs and flare smooth, balanced bowls.
  • Rim Finishing: Compress and refine the lip for strength, durability, and comfort.
  • Intro to Trimming: Identify the leather-hard drying stage, secure pieces upside down, and trim excess clay.

Phase 3: Scaling Up, Handles & Refining (Month 2)

Increase clay weight, assemble multi-part vessels, and refine functional details.

  • Heavier Balls: Work with 800–1,000 g of clay while keeping structural integrity.
  • Foot Trimming: Carve defined, lightweight foot rings using specialized ribbon tools.
  • Pulling & Attaching Handles: Hand-pull handles with balanced proportions, securing them cleanly with slip.
  • Cross-Section Checks: Wire-cut study pieces in half to visually analyze wall taper and weight distribution.

Phase 4: Precision, Lids & Production Consistency (Month 3)

Focus on repeatability, tight tolerances, and final curation.

  • Throwing in Series: Use calipers and studio gauges to throw matched sets with identical dimensions.
  • Lidded Vessels & Galleries: Design jars and fitted lids while factoring in clay shrinkage rates.
  • Final Edit: Curated selection of your top 5 pieces—evaluating weight, balance, and daily utility.

FAQ

  • Who is this course for? Everyone, especially complete beginners. No prior wheel-throwing experience is needed.
  • How long does the course run? 10 weeks. We run two terms per year: January to April, and September to December.
  • When and where? Every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., hosted at Studio MUD (Via Alloro 66, Palermo).
  • Who will be teaching? Studio MUD resident instructors and guest ceramic artists carefully selected by our studio.
  • What is included? All clay and studio tools, course handouts/materials, plus glazing and firing for up to 4 selected pieces.
  • What is not included? Shipping of your finished pieces (if required).
  • What should I bring? Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting messy and trimmed fingernails (especially for your first few sessions). Clay washes out of fabric and shoes easily, and we provide aprons to keep you covered.
