From Raw Clay to Your First Pot

Beginner Wheel Throwing Course: learn the art of the pottery wheel in the heart of Palermo! Designed for anyone who loves ceramics and wants to experience Sicily’s most iconic city, this beginner course blends tradition, technique, and passion in an artist’s studio guided by local ceramicists.

It’s perfect for those who love art and culture and want to discover Palermo’s authentic soul, its markets, artisan workshops, and timeless beauty. No experience required, just a desire to create and be inspired.

Objectives: In this course you’ll master the fundamentals of wheel work, studying step by step all phases of throwing and trimming. Wheel-throwing is complex, but with your instructor’s personal approach you’ll gain the core skills to make simple forms in small and medium sizes. You’ll also learn the techniques for adding handles and building lids.

You’ll learn to:

  • Identify clays by their specific composition.
  • Wedge clay to make it workable on the wheel.
  • Center clay on the wheel for perfect symmetry.
  • Pull a cylinder and open it.
  • Raise the cylinder walls.
  • Shape specific forms.
  • Trim the pieces you’ve made.

The main goal is to master all essential steps to create a technically sound wheel thrown piece, so you can continue practicing independently after the course.

To support this, we’ll review most of your production during the week to assess quality and spot technical issues. The studio will also provide instructional videos so you can revise the techniques you learned.
