Workshop speciali

PITFIRE WORKSHOP

4 October @ 3:00 pm - 5 October @ 11:00 am
Pitfire

October 4 @ 3:00 PM – October 5 @ 11:00 AM

PITFIRE WORKSHOP: two days to unplug, get your hands in the earth… and experience the magic of fire. With the Pitfire we explore ceramics in its most primitive and fascinating form: we shape the clay, prepare the pit, light the fire, and stay together through the night, under the stars. In the morning, we’ll uncover our pieces — still warm, alive with colors and stories.

Program:

Day 1 – Afternoon

  • Introduction to Pitfire: a journey through the history of pit firing, its origins, and cultural variations.
  • Preparing the pieces: decoration techniques, clay selection, burnishing, and surface treatments (including the preparation of terra sigillata for those who wish to experiment with smooth and glossy finishes).
  • Setting up the pit: preparing the firing pit, exploring materials such as sawdust, salts, oxides, and leaves — and understanding how each element influences the final outcome.

Day 1 – Evening

  • Lighting the Pitfire, which will burn through the night.
  • Setting up tents (for those camping in the garden), a convivial evening around the fire with food and conversation.
  • Optional activities: while the fire works its magic, we can create dorodango (polished clay spheres) or model small amulets to be fired later.

Day 2

  • Opening the pit and discovering the pieces. We’ll discuss the differences in colors, textures, and effects achieved.
  • Cleaning and finishing the works.
  • Sharing experiences, reflections, and workshop closure.

Pieces to be fired: two options available:

  • Visit the studio by September 20 to prepare your own pieces (we’ll help you if you’re new to ceramics).
  • Choose from the pre-made pieces provided by us.
