On Sunday, February 21, 2027, we’ll join ceramic artist Angelica Tulimiero to explore Neriage and Nerikomi — techniques that combine different coloured clays to create patterns and designs that run through the material itself.
We’ll start by mixing clay with pigments to create our own colours, then experiment with combinations, patterns and compositions. From there, we’ll build a patterned slab and turn it into a unique hand-built ceramic piece of your own.

Neriage and Nerikomi are two Japanese ceramic techniques known for their striking use of coloured clay.
Instead of adding colour to the surface, colour becomes part of the material itself — embedded in the clay the piece is made from.
The workshop starts with colour. Together with Angelica Tulimiero, we’ll learn how to mix pigments into clay, experimenting with different ratios to create a range of tones and intensities.
Angelica will then introduce us to the expressive possibilities of Neriage and Nerikomi, exploring layers, geometries, marbled effects and patterns created by combining different coloured clays.
After the demonstration, it’s time to experiment. Each participant will develop their own composition and create a patterned slab where colour and design run through the clay itself.
Using slab-building techniques, you’ll then turn your composition into a hand-built ceramic piece of your choice.
More than a decorative technique, Neriage and Nerikomi offer a new visual language to explore the relationship between colour, material and form.
The Teacher
Angelica Tulimiero is a contemporary ceramic artist whose practice is rooted in the observation of material and the textures and patterns found in nature, explored through clay, form and surface.
Her work and research have taken her across the world, from the United States and Indonesia to Armenia and China, where her encounter with the tradition of celadon has deeply influenced her more recent practice.
Alongside her artistic work, Angelica has been teaching ceramics since 2013, leading courses, workshops and masterclasses focused on hand-building techniques. Today, she works from her studio in Bozzolo, in the province of Mantua.

Workshop Details
- When is the workshop? Sunday, February 21, 2027
- Where? At Studio Mud, Via Alloro 66, Palermo
- How long is it? 5 hours, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
- Are materials included? Yes, we’ll provide everything you need.
- Lunch is included and offered to all participants.
- What should you bring? Comfortable clothes… and your curiosity! We’ll take care of everything else.
- Are places limited? Yes, the workshop is limited to 10 participants. It will go ahead with a minimum of 8 participants registered by January 31, 2027. Save your spot!
- How much does it cost? €120 per person. If you’re attending a Studio Mud intensive or weekly course, you’ll get 10% off one workshop of your choice (€108). Newsletter subscribers get 5% off their first workshop of choice (€114).
- What happens if the workshop is cancelled? If we don’t reach the minimum of 8 participants, or if the workshop cannot go ahead for any other reason, you can choose between a full refund or a voucher for the same amount to use towards another Studio Mud workshop.
